Beavers

Castor canadensis

Autumn is dam building time for beavers. While beavers constantly repair their existing dams throughout the year, fall is the time when new dams are started by dispersing youngsters. Most of these dams don't survive winter and spring floods, but fall is the time to traipse creeks looking for them. For those befuddled by beaver barrier building behavior a full explanation can be found in the Archives Section of this site under Why Beavers Build  Dams.
