Blue Boneset

Eupatorium coelestinum

Blue Boneset – also called Mist Flower – is a native herb with beautiful blue flower heads. Nothing is more arresting than an unmown autumn field with this species in bloom.

Like all of the members of its genus this species was used medicinally for hastening the repair of nearly all injuries of the flesh. For deep bruises and sprains a warm compress of the whole plant was applied and bound in place. For broken or fractured bones tea made from the flowers or leaves was used in addition to the compresses.

Blue Boneset favors low, wet areas and are common elements of floodplain fields and pastures bordering creeks and rivers in our area. Flowering time lasts from late summer until the first frost. This plant is spreads rampantly and aggressively - germinating readily from seed - so wildflower gardeners should beware and give this plant lots of room to grow.
