Rose Breasted Grosbeaks

Pheucticus ludovicianus

While Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks don't usually summer in our area they're common and colorful migrants, flying south in the fall to their wintering grounds in Central and South America, and returning to the north of our area in the spring. These robust seed-eaters were originally residents of the now nearly extinct black-soil savannas of northern Illinois where they nested and reared their young. Fortunately for everyone these adaptable and striking birds now nest primarily along the margins of woodlands, golf courses and anywhere the forest meets a clearing.
