Green-Backed HeronButorides virescens
These odd looking birds spend the summer fattening along lake margins and in swamps on the numerous small fish that frequent well- vegetated shores. This little Heron (about the size of a crow) isn't usually seen without a good deal of effort during the summer where it can be found on the edges of brushy, weed-choked beds of aquatic plants where they hunt small fish. In the fall our summer herons move south, but migrants pass through who summered further north. They'll pause in our area long enough to replenish their fat reserves before resuming their trip south to the Gulf coast and northern South America where they spend the winter. They leave our area completely by the end of October. Suggest a link! Send suggestions to Webmaster |
