Black SwallowtailsPapilio polyxenes
In the fall, after gorging on the foliage of Queen Anne's Lace and other members of the carrot family, the Swallowtail caterpillars found sheltered locations and changed into chrysalises sleeping the winter away. With the warmth of spring they emerge as butterflies and flutter about seeking food and mates to carry on the cycle. Black Swallowtails are meadow butterflies and are often seen in urban areas bordering fields. Their near (and closely patterned) relations the Spicebush Swallowtails and the bright yellow Tiger Swallowtails appear in the forests about the same time.
