WalnutsJuglans nigra
Anyone who lives under a Black Walnut tree is always certain of the onset of fall for the large, heavy nuts make quite a din as they slam into roofs when released from their parent tree. Our native Black Walnuts were an important source of raw materials for the aborigines who occupied this continent before the arrival of European civilization. The nut husks and leaves have valuable topical medicinal properties for skin diseases. The dark, straight-grained wood is easy to work, takes a high polish and resists warping and checking (hence its modern use for gun stocks). The ripe nuts attracted all manner of game and, of course, the nuts themselves are an important source of oil and protein. Black Walnuts are possibly the most valuable timber tree in our forests. |
