Jim died on the Ides of March, 2007, of lung cancer.

Click on Farewell to Jim for details.

There will be no printed 2008 Almanac. I have had the grief process and other pressing matters occuping my attention. It is possible that Jim left notes that will enable me to produce the planting charts and the animal activity charts. In addition, I may have found an editor for subsequent WHTC Almanacs. It won't be the same, of course. No one but Jim could write like Jim! But I think we can continue in a manner that he would be happy to have his name associated with. Check back, as I will post more details as things develop.

What's The Waterman and Hill-Traveller's Companion?

This a regional almanac, published annually, that charts the timing of Natural Events in the Midwest, specifically Southern Illinois, Southeast Missouri and Western Kentucky. With it you'll be able to know when and where to visit the woods to find your favorite mushroom, wild flower, bird or butterfly (among many other organisms). It's your guide for lost treasures, ghosts, wildlife and area geology, ecology and natural history. It also contains black-and-white illustrations by local artists. Look for a source near you in our Outlets or order a copy from us by mail.

What does this site offer?

Every month we reprint two core elements of the hard copy WHTC, the Astronomical Almanac and the Natural Events page. In addition, in the chart at your left are links to several other pages of interest, unique to this website, concerning the natural beauty and bounty of this (usually overlooked) area. We encourage everyone (but especially children!) to contact us with any questions you might have regarding our area's natural or human history and any other questions or observations of nature you might have.

Remember most of our pages change monthly so visit us often.

We hope you enjoy your visit!
